ANTHONY POOLE
General Counsel
Anthony is a leading media and regulatory lawyer with particular expertise in acquiring, aggregating and exploiting content on all traditional and new media platforms.
Anthony spent nine years as senior Legal Counsel at FOXTEL, the pre-eminent subscription television-broadcasting platform in Australia. During his time at FOXTEL, Anthony gained significant experience in all aspects of broadcasting, including regulatory and compliance, production and programming (from the initial production agreement through to vetting the program script and finished program for defamation and classification issues), distribution, engineering, broadcast operations, satellite and cable operations, online distribution, marketing and advertising clearances.
Anthony was the lead lawyer on a number of key FOXTEL original productions, and negotiated programming acquisition and distribution agreements with a wide range of industry players, from small independent production houses through to complex output deals with all the major US studios. Many of these deals were the first in Australia to contemplate exploitation through new media channels, such as mobile and Internet streaming, Internet downloading and video on demand platforms.
Anthony was also involved in major infrastructure deals with Optus, AUSTAR and Telstra with an emphasis on content licensing and facilities sharing arrangements with these broadcasters.
Television in Australia is highly competitive but also poses growing opportunities for non-traditional media sources. Working in this field has made Anthony keenly aware of the importance for all players in the market, both broadcasters and content creators, to be at the forefront of the ever changing landscape of content aggregation and exploitation while ensuring that their content remains protected from illegal use.
Prior to his time at FOXTEL, Anthony was a senior lawyer at Allens Arthur Robinson, practising in corporate law, commercial property and planning law and has extensive experience in all aspects of commercial law.
