The Latest on Women in the Law

Identifying barriers and impediments to the progression of women in the law and developing strategies to address them is the focus of the Law Society of NSW’s major thought leadership initiative for 2011.

In order to shed light on this issue, the Society released a report “Thought Leadership 2011: Advancement of women in the profession – Report and Recommendations”. In this report, data from the Law Society’s database and its Annual Practising Certificate Survey as well as a series of roundtable discussions involving close to 100 Society members illustrates issues currently faced by women in the law including retention, advancement, mentoring, flexible work arrangements, remuneration and workplace culture.

The report provides a number of recommendations to address these issues, including professional development programs, published information encouraging flexible working arrangements and facilitation of mentoring opportunities.
